TRANSGENIC ORGANISMS

IN FOODS




CONTROL MICROBIOLÓGICO S.L. has adopted measures to ensure customers receive the highest quality standards in all tests and results. In 2002, the Laboratory signed an agreement with the Barcelona Institute of Molecular Biology, a CSIC (Spanish National Research Council) research unit, to exchange their technical expertise and our qualified staff. Consequently, we are able to offer our customers state-of-the-art, reliable and validated GMO detection techniques.

1.- What are transgenic foods?

These are foods made from genetically modified organisms (GMO) or that contain ingredients derived from any GMO. GMOs are organisms whose genome has undergone modification through genetic engineering techniques. Such modifications may be effected by means of introducing genes from other organisms, or by altering the organism´s own genes. Such modifications are brought about with the aim of furnishing certain advantageous features to a given crop that will enhance its growth and survival.


2.- What are new foods?

According to European Union legislation, which establishes the appropriate marketing and labelling regulations, new foods are all foods or food ingredients that previously had not been used as such by Member States. This category, therefore, comprises any foods consisting of, containing or derived from GMOs.


3.- Is labelling mandatory for these new foods?

The European Commission established labelling regulations applicable to foods for human consumption, whether entirely or partially manufactured from GMOs, in Regulation 1139/98. This was later subjected to modification with two new Regulations: RG 1829/2003 and RG 1830/2003, which set out rules regarding the threshold beyond which labelling of foods or animal feeds containing GMOs (0.9%) becomes mandatory, and traceability and labelling regulations for these products. At present, foods in Europe may contain ingredients deriving from only two GMO species: soya and maize. This limitation, however, is temporary since new GMOs for human consumption are soon to receive EU approval for free access to the market.

1. Metodology

CONTROL MICROBIOLOGICO S.L.is equipped with state-of-the-art technology for the detection and quantification of GMOs within a sample, with sensitivity levels of over 0.1%, based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methodology. This highly dependable and precise technique for the detection and enumeration of GMOs allows us to deliver the best possible service to our clients.

Every test is subjected to the following controls:

·  External Positive Controls: Standard curve for samples containing known quantities of GMOs and of false negatives control (caused by PCR inhibitors).
·  External Negative Controls: Samples containing nil GMOs.
·  Internal Control: To detect the presence of maize or soya DNA in the food sample.


Reproducibility is ensured by analysing samples in duplicate and including three PCR reactions for each duplicate.




2. Types of Analysis

·  Qualitative Analysis
  *Basic detection: Presence/Absence of GMOs
  *Specific detection: Soya transgene Roundup Ready(RR Soya)
    Maize transgene (Bt-176)
    Maize transgene (Bt-11)
    Maize transgene (Mon 810)

·  Quantitative Analysis
  Determination of the transgenic maize/soya percentage (compared to overall maize/soya content) present in the food sample.


3. Samples submission and turnaround time for results

Samples Submission:

Rates include the cost of submitting samples to the Laboratory.

Sample Size:

- Solid samples: 100-300g

- Liquid samples: 500ml

Turnaround time:

- Routine service: 72h

In addition, our Laboratory regularly participates in prestigious international inter-laboratory GMO ring trials.

Moreover, after two years of dedicated work and diligent adherence to our strict quality assurance policies, CONTROL MICROBIOLÓGICO S.L. was awarded ENAC accreditation for GMO detection techniques in September 2004.
